Sanjay Rao and the Success Story of MonkeyBox

For Sanjay Rao, planning his kid’s meals which could be both tasty and healthy was daunting.

After discussing this with his childhood friend, Sandeep Kannambadi and a detailed market research later, they found this problem, universal. Thus, came to be the genesis of Bengaluru based startup, MonkeyBox in October 2015.


“MonkeyBox is a startup focused on delivering healthy and nutritious food to the school kids.”

They call themselves ‘a subscription model’, wherein parents signup for the offers and the boxes with fresh food are delivered to the kids directly in the school.

“We have multiple packages” Sanjay adds. They are carefully thought and designed to prove beneficial,
both for the kids and their parents –
3 meals – 5 day, 10 day and 22 day package
2 meals – 5 day, 10 day and 22 day package
Lunch only – 10 day and 22 day package

“The 3-meal package comprises of Breakfast, Lunch and post school snacks. They are balanced as per RDA standards; so are the portions along with its spicy factor carefully looked into, for each group. Breakfast always comprises of breakfast mains and Fruits. Lunch has salads and balanced plate with appropriate carbohydrates and proteins. Everything is prepared fresh from our state of the art kitchens, wherein hygiene and cleanliness are maintained with utmost planning.”

A company which rose to success in such quick tenure has to have a brilliant marketing strategy in place. “Most of our customers come from the referral portal; word of mouth works best in schools and kindergartens. We also have few events in the kitchens like MasterChef classes, where we engage kids and help their parents understand the importance of good food. Spread of awareness is a win-win situation for both.”

When asked what makes them different, he has two good reasons, which are too good to ignore.

“MonkeyBox is kids-specific. We are grounded by the vision that whatever we do will make sure the kids have fun and simultaneously, have a healthy childhood and stay fit. The fact that healthy food can be delicious too is the big change we have brought in.

We have this unique model of zero wastage, with less impact on the environment by using reusable boxes and positive unit economics.

Overall, the footprint we leave on the future generation is tremendously positive. “

The team of MonkeyBox has a lot of exciting ideas to watch out for. They are currently planning on expansion across Bengaluru, implementing multiple cluster kitchens across the city and have planned to target 12,000 subscribers by March 2018. They want to integrate elements of fun and innovations, while focusing on Kids’ health and wellness for their overall development.
